Today we open a drawer, not a book. Inside are six things a scientist might carry back from a forest: a lump of charcoal, a slice of a tree, a jar of layered mud, a photograph, a handful of acorns, and a dot of yellow dust too small to see. Somebody thinks these things, together, can tell us whether people were setting fires in these woods three thousand years ago — and our job this week is to decide whether they're right.

The Hall's Question

People used fire to reshape whole landscapes long before they farmed them — the "wilderness" Europeans described was often a managed garden. — or is it? Fire use was opportunistic, not managed; the scale of deliberate landscape change is overstated. The student will decide, from evidence. Hypothesis on the wall: If pre-contact peoples managed landscapes with fire, then charcoal and pollen records should show burn regularity that natural ignition cannot explain.

The Lesson, Step by Step

1. Open the drawer Look 12 min

Set out six items on a cloth, spaced apart, with no labels: (1) a piece of charcoal from your own fire pit or grill; (2) a cross-cut slice of firewood, ideally one with a dark scar or seam; (3) a clear jar layered with sand, ash, and soil; (4) a printed photo of open oak savanna beside one of dense closed forest; (5) a few acorns or hazelnuts; (6) a printed micrograph of pollen grains. Let each child handle everything for a full five minutes. Say nothing explanatory. Then ask only: which two of these belong together, and why?

2. Three piles and an argument Discuss 10 min

Ask the children to sort all six objects into three piles: made by fire, made by people, made by time. Expect disagreement — that is the point. Charcoal is fire's leaving, but who lit the fire? The acorn is time's work, but the savanna photo shows a forest thinned enough for oaks to fatten in sunlight. Younger children can sort by touch and color; older ones should defend each placement out loud. Record the piles on paper as they finally stand. Do not resolve the arguments. Write the unresolved ones in the margin — you will return to them Thursday.

3. Read the tree slice Make 13 min

Give each child the wood slice and a hand lens. Have them draw it large — the whole circle, the rings, any dark wedge or seam. Count rings outward from the center together; younger children can trace while an older sibling counts. Ask: if a fire licked this trunk and the tree lived on, where in the drawing would the burn sit, and how would you know what year it happened? Let them mark a guess. This is fire-scar dating in miniature, and they have just invented it themselves. Label the drawing with the child's name and today's date.

4. The question card Write 8 min

Hand each child a single index card. On it they write one question the objects raised that the objects cannot answer — one honest question, not a guess. Prompt the stuck ones: what would you need to know to tell a lightning fire from a person's fire? Younger children may dictate to you; write their words exactly, not tidied. Read the cards aloud without comment, then pin them where the family will pass them all week. Tell the children plainly that the hall's hypothesis is coming tomorrow, and that these cards are the test it must survive.

Pull out drawer 12. It is wide and not deep. Inside are six trays. Each tray has a small typed card. Do not read the cards yet. Look first. Tray one: a lump of charcoal, about the size of a walnut. It is black and very light in the hand. You can still see the grain of the wood in it. The card says it came from the mud under Beaver Lake, in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. It lay 2.4 meters down. Tray two: a slice of an Oregon white oak. Someone cut across the trunk and sanded it smooth. The rings show clearly. Near the middle they run even. Then they bend around a dark, triangular wound. That is a fire scar. Fire killed a strip of living wood under the bark. The tree grew over the hurt place for years afterward. Tray three: a glass tube of mud, sealed at both ends. It is a piece of a sediment core (a column of lake mud lifted out with its layers still in order). Some bands are pale. Some are dark. A few hold black smears of charcoal. Tray four: a photograph from 1899, taken from a ridge south of Corvallis. It shows grass, and oaks standing far apart. You could walk between them. Beside it hangs the same view today. Now it is a wall of Douglas-fir. Tray five: nine acorns in a paper envelope. No card at all. Acorns come in a mast (the nut crop of one year), and some years the crop is huge. Tray six looks empty. Hold the slide to the light. There is one speck. Under a microscope it becomes a pollen grain, spiky, with three pores. It came from an oak. Someone in this building thinks these six things, together, can show whether people burned these woods on purpose three thousand years ago. This week you do not decide. You sort. Which objects came with a date? How exact is that date? Which came from a lake, which from a tree, which from a camera? Which one could have landed there by accident? Say your questions out loud.
Anchor · ~9th grade (anchor)
Drawer 12 slides out with a rattle like a drawer of forks. It is shallow and wide, and it holds six trays, each with a small typed card that nobody is going to read to you yet. Tray one holds a lump of charcoal the size of a walnut, black, light in the hand, still showing the grain of the wood it used to be. Card: Beaver Lake, Willamette Valley, Oregon. Depth, 2.4 meters below the lake bottom. Tray two holds a disc of Oregon white oak, cut across the trunk and sanded until the rings stand out. Count outward from the center and the rings run smooth; then, about a third of the way out, they buckle around a dark triangular wound. That is a fire scar. Flame killed a strip of living tissue under the bark, and the tree spent the following decades growing over the injury. Tray three holds a sealed glass tube of mud: a piece of a sediment core (a column of lake-bottom mud lifted out with its layers still stacked in order). Pale bands, dark bands, and here and there a black smear of charcoal. Tray four is a photograph made in 1899 from a ridge south of Corvallis — grass, and oaks standing so far apart you could drive a wagon between them. Beside it the curators have pinned the same view today: a closed wall of Douglas-fir. Tray five holds nine acorns in a paper envelope, undated and unlabeled, from a mast (a single year's nut crop) nobody has identified. Tray six looks empty until you hold the slide to the light and find one speck. Under the microscope it becomes a pollen grain, spiky and three-pored, released by an oak. Somebody in this building believes these six objects, taken together, can settle whether people were deliberately (on purpose) burning these woods three thousand years ago. The hall's larger claim is that the "wilderness" European settlers described was often a landscape people had shaped with fire for millennia (thousands of years). This week you do not have to agree with anyone. This week you sort. Group the objects by what each one can actually carry: which arrive with a date, and how tight that date is; which came from a lake, which from a tree, which from a camera; which could have reached the place it was found by accident, blown in, washed in, or dropped by a squirrel. Then say aloud the question each object leaves open, and write it on the board. The rest of the hall is an attempt to close those questions.
Harder · ~11th grade
Drawer 12 is shallow, wide, and organized to be argued with: six trays, six typed cards, and no interpretation supplied. The first tray holds a walnut-sized lump of charcoal — wood burned in air too poor to reduce it to ash, so that it retained its cell structure — recovered from beneath Beaver Lake in Oregon's Willamette Valley, 2.4 meters below the present lake bottom. The second holds a cross-section of Oregon white oak, sanded until the annual rings resolve, carrying a fire scar a third of the way out from the pith (the soft center of the trunk): a wedge of tissue killed by flame and subsequently overgrown. The third is a sealed length of sediment core, its laminations (thin stacked layers) alternating pale and dark, with charcoal smeared through several of them. The fourth is a photograph made in 1899 from a ridge south of Corvallis, showing widely spaced oaks over open grass, paired with a modern image of unbroken Douglas-fir. The fifth is nine acorns in an envelope, undated, from an unidentified mast (one season's nut crop). The sixth is a slide bearing a single oak pollen grain, spiny and three-pored. The proposition (the claim being advanced) attached to this drawer is that the six objects, in combination, can determine whether people were burning these woods deliberately three thousand years ago — and behind it stands the hall's broader assertion that the "wilderness" described by European settlers was frequently a landscape managed by fire for millennia. Nothing about that follows from the objects themselves, and this week you are not asked to accept it. You are asked to sort. The useful axes are three. First, resolution (how fine the detail is): a fire scar can be assigned to a single year, whereas a centimeter of sediment core may compress decades. Second, reach: the oak slice records a few centuries, the lake mud several thousand years, the photograph a single afternoon. Third, vulnerability to alternative explanation: charcoal in a lake layer is equally consistent with lightning, and pollen or acorns may have arrived by wind, water, or squirrel rather than by human hand. Sort them, then state precisely what each object cannot rule out. Those unresolved possibilities, written on the board and left standing, are the agenda for the remainder of this hall.

Discussion & Thinking Questions

Compare the oak slice with the fire scar to the tube of sediment core. Using both terms, decide which object gives the sharper date and which reaches further back, and name one thing each one cannot tell you.

The 1899 photograph is the only object a person made on purpose in order to record the scene. Does that make it stronger or weaker evidence than the pollen grain? Argue from the drawer.

The nine acorns arrived with no card and no date. Using the term mast, say what you would need to learn before the acorns could support any claim about people burning these woods.

Today we are not going to read a single word about cities. We are going to open a drawer instead, and let the things inside do the talking. Everything in it belonged to somebody who got where they were going on their own two feet — and the whole hall we are about to spend a week in rests on one hunch: that the body itself once set how big a city could be. Hands out, mouths open, books shut.

The Hall's Question

Before cheap transport, a city could only be as wide as a person could walk in an hour — human bodies set the radius of settlement. — or is it? Water transport and animal power broke that limit far earlier than the model allows. The student will decide, from evidence. Hypothesis on the wall: If the body set the radius of settlement, then pre-transit cities should cluster tightly around an hour walk from the centre.

The Lesson, Step by Step

1. Open the drawer Look 12 min

Lay these out on a towel, unlabelled, spaced apart: a worn shoe or boot with the heel gone crooked; a cobbler's last or a shoe-repair kit; a printed 1850s city map (Boston, Edinburgh, or your nearest old core); a pocket watch or wind-up clock; a candle stub; a horse's shoe or bridle photo; a milk bottle or churn; a chamber pot photo if you dare. Say nothing about any of them. Give everyone three full minutes of silent looking and touching before a single word. Then go around: each person names one thing they notice, not one thing they know. Notice, not know — hold that line gently.

2. Sort them three ways Discuss 12 min

Ask the group to sort the objects into piles — but you choose the rule each round, and you don't explain it in advance. Round one: things made of leather, wood, metal, other. Round two: things a rich person owned versus things nearly everyone owned. Round three, the important one: how far from home was each thing used? Kitchen, street, edge of town, far away. Expect argument on round three. Let it run. Younger children can physically move objects; older ones should have to defend a placement out loud before the pile changes.

3. One hour on your own feet Map 10 min

Step outside, or to a window. Ask: if you left our front door right now and walked for one hour, where would you stop? Have each person guess a landmark before checking anything. Then sketch it — a rough circle on blank paper, your house a dot in the middle, the landmark on the rim. No scale, no rulers, no phone maps yet. Older students may pace out five minutes and multiply. Ask the wondering question and leave it hanging unanswered: what if that circle were the whole city, and nothing existed outside it?

4. The question card Write 8 min

Give each person one index card. On it they write a single question raised by the drawer — the best question they have, not the easiest. Younger students may dictate to you; you write their exact words, not tidied-up words. Sample only if they stall: 'Why is the heel worn on one side?' 'Who filled the milk bottle?' Collect the cards, read them aloud without naming authors, and pin them somewhere visible. Tell them plainly: this week we test whether the body set the size of the old city, and these questions are our first evidence of what we don't yet know.

Books shut. Hands out. Today we open a drawer. Six things lie inside on grey foam. Each one belonged to a person who walked to work, to market, and home again. The first is a shoe sole. The leather is stained black by river mud. A mudlark pulled it off the Thames foreshore in London. The foreshore is the strip of mud the river uncovers at low tide. Look at the small iron studs in the leather. Each stud is a hobnail. Hobnails gave a walker grip on wet stone. Now find the places where the studs are worn away to nothing. They are flat under the ball of the foot and flat under the heel. That is a wear pattern. It is a record of miles. The second object is a patten. It is a wooden sole on an iron ring. You strapped it over your shoe. It lifted you above the muck of an unpaved street. The iron ring is worn thin on one side only. The third object is heavy. It is a slab of York stone from a doorstep. The middle of it dips down by two fingers. Feet did that. Nobody carved it. The fourth object is a wooden last. A shoemaker shaped wet leather around it. It is a foot made of wood. It shows the size the shoemaker planned. It does not show one single step. The fifth object is paper. It is a printed plan of Cologne from 1572. The city wall makes a ring around the houses. Put your thumb in the middle. The far wall is not far away. The sixth object is small and grey. It is a lead pilgrim badge from Canterbury. Its owner walked about sixty miles to get it. Now sort. Take two trays. In one tray, put the objects that bodies wore down. In the other, put the objects that tell you a distance. Some objects will fight you. Argue about those out loud. Here is the hunch behind this whole hall. Before cheap transport, a settlement could only grow as wide as a person could walk in an hour. That distance is the radius. The wall on the Cologne plan may sit exactly where tired legs put it. Do not decide today. Today you look, you sort, you wonder. We weigh the hunch all week.

A mudlark lifted it off the Thames foreshore in London — the foreshore being the strip of mud a tidal river uncovers twice a day. Its underside still bristles with hobnails, the short iron nails hammered through a sole for grip and long life. Count them, then find the gaps where the iron has been rubbed down to smooth stumps. Those bald patches sit under the ball of the foot and under the heel, and that wear pattern is not decoration. It is the arithmetic of somebody's working week, written in metal. Next to it lies a patten: a wooden overshoe mounted on an iron ring, strapped over a good shoe to lift its owner clear of the muck of an unpaved street. The ring is worn thin on one side only, which should make you ask how a person walks to grind iron unevenly. The heavy object is a doorstep, a slab of York stone whose middle sags by two fingers' depth. No mason carved that hollow; feet did, one crossing at a time. The wooden object is a last, the foot-shaped block a shoemaker builds leather around. It records a size somebody wanted. It records no distance at all. The flat object is a printed plan of Cologne from 1572. The wall draws a rough ring around the roofs. Put a thumb at the centre and notice how close the edge sits. The smallest object is a lead pilgrim badge from Canterbury, bought at the end of a walk of some sixty miles. Now sort them. Two trays: objects that bodies wore down, and objects that report a distance. Certain items will refuse both trays, or demand both, and those are the interesting ones. Say your reasons aloud so the rest of us can push back. The hunch underneath this whole hall is simple. Before cheap transport, a settlement could only spread as far as a body could carry itself in an hour — perhaps three miles — and that distance became the radius of ordinary life. If the hunch holds, the wall on the Cologne plan is not merely a defence; it is a measurement of human legs. Decide nothing today. Look, sort, wonder. We will weigh the claim all week.
Harder · ~11th grade
Books shut. Today we forgo the argument and go straight to the material, because six objects on grey foam make a better opening statement than any paragraph about cities could. Each belonged to somebody whose entire range of movement was supplied by two legs. Consider first the leather sole, blackened by anaerobic river silt and recovered by a mudlark from the Thames foreshore, the strip of mud a tidal river exposes at low water. Its underside retains a scatter of hobnails — short iron nails driven through the sole for traction and durability — and, more usefully, the places where those nails have been abraded (rubbed away) to flush stumps beneath the ball of the foot and the heel. Read that wear pattern as an accumulation: not one journey but thousands, deposited in metal by a body repeating the same route. Beside it sits a patten, a wooden overshoe carried on an iron ring, strapped over finer footwear to raise the wearer above the filth of an unpaved street; its ring is thinned asymmetrically, on one side alone. A York-stone doorstep, dished two fingers deep, records the same process in the opposite direction — here the ground yielded and the feet won. A shoemaker's last, the wooden block around which leather is formed, records intention rather than attrition (wearing away through use): a size somebody ordered, a journey nobody made. A printed plan of Cologne from 1572 encircles its roofs with a wall drawn tight enough that a thumb at the centre nearly touches the edge. A lead pilgrim badge from Canterbury represents roughly sixty miles walked once, for reasons no ordinary morning would supply. Sort them, then, into two trays: artefacts worn down by bodies, and artefacts that state a distance. The awkward cases — the badge, the doorstep — are precisely where your reasoning becomes audible, so argue in the open and expect contradiction. The governing hunch of this hall is that before cheap transport the practical limit of a settlement was the ground a body could cover in an hour, perhaps three miles, and that this limit hardened into the radius of everyday life, walls and markets and workshops arranged inside it. Six objects cannot establish that; they survived by accident, they carry no odometers, and a drawer is a poor sample of a civilisation. What they can do is make the claim answerable. Look, sort, wonder aloud. Judgement waits until Friday.

Discussion & Thinking Questions

The Thames sole and the shoemaker's last are both foot-shaped. Using the words hobnail and wear pattern, argue which one is better evidence that somebody actually walked a long way, and say what the weaker object can still tell you.

The Cologne plan of 1572 and the Canterbury pilgrim badge suggest very different distances. Use radius and settlement to explain why the badge does not sink the hall's claim.

You sorted the drawer into two trays. Choose the object you found hardest to place, and argue from the object itself why the drawer alone cannot settle whether bodies set the size of cities.

A blank city centre and a compass rose. The student draws the hour-walk ring — roughly three miles out — then plots the gates, the market, and the wells inside it. Overlay the river: where does the counterclaim (water transport) break the ring? The map is the argument; the student defends the radius or breaks it.
